Al-Sumait Prize for African Development

At the third meeting of the African Arab Summit, the Amir of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, announced an initiative to celebrate the work of scientists making a real difference to the lives of millions. Titled the " Al-Sumait Prize for African Development", after Kuwaiti physician Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait who spent his lifetime dedicated to helping the poor in Africa in the fields of health and education, this annual award recognizes notable achievements made in the advancement of economic, social, human resources, and infrastructure development within the African continent.

The objective of the prize is to recognize and appreciate the best studies, scientific projects, applied research programs and other initiatives, which have made a significant impact and continue to have a lasting influence on advancing economic and social development in Africa.

Winning projects should help African nations overcome poverty, a hunger, lack of potable water, injustice or should serve to improve health care, literacy rates and the allocation of economic resources. The prize is also aimed at highlighting notable successes within the fields of food security, health and education.
