Piloting Pressure Coring Technology in Oil & Gas

Middle East OilField Services (MEOFS) is a local Kuwaiti company that is established ten years ago by KMiuwaiti Engineers who have worked in the Oil & Gas industry in Kuwait and other places in the world. They have captured the need for transferring technology to Kuwait to solve the local Oil and Gas changes in Kuwait and the gulf region. MEOFS have been implementing new technologies in Kuwait with KOC and KNPC.

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT KFAS, AND THE ENTERPRISE SUPPORT PROGRAM?

KFAS is a well known entity in Kuwait which affected us since our early days in High School. Also, we have personally received funds from KFAS for publication in 2007. We have heard about this particular fund through Dr. Lobna Okashah.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM YOU WERE TRYING TO SOLVE?

In the Oil and Gas industry, we work blindly as we do not see the fluid in the rock as in the downhole conditions. It has been a big challenge to the industry to have information about the reservoir as close to reality as possible. We have solved this issue by capturing a full scale pressure sample in downhole conditions and transferring it to the surface.

RESEARCH INSTITUTION

Corsyde International is our technology partner from Germany and they are associated with the German Institution: “Chair of Continuum Mechanics and Material Theory” at the “Institute of Mechanics” at the Technical University of Berlin.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The implementation and modification if need of a world wide new technology which is developed by Corsyde International (Germany) in Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) for the oil and gas wells. This technology will help the oil and gas industry acquire sensitive information from the oil and gas reservoir by have a pressure core to the surface during drilling process in the formation pressure. The engineer will be able to understand valuable information from the reservoir using this technology. This is a struggle for our industry to have a true representative of the formation at its conditions which will be done by for the first time in Kuwait in cooperation with Kuwait Oil Company.

HOW DID KFAS HELP WITH YOUR PROJECT?

KFAS main contribution is in Co-Funding the Project. This project has a high cost to MEOFS and Corsdye and Kuwait Oil Company. KFAS have helped all of us in making this project a success.

TO WHAT EXTENT DID KFAS ADD ADDITIONAL VALUE TO YOUR PROJECT?

We are planning to develop a newer version of the tool that can be use in deeper wells with high H2S content and we hope KFAS can support the fund.

WHAT WAS THE STI RELATED SOLUTION NEEDED FOR YOUR PROJECT?

Testing of new, advanced technology material

WORKING WITH THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

We have been involved with our partners in first testing the tool which have failed in the field as we also observed the first implementation and failure. Then, we had the chance to modify it along with the support of Corsyde International and the Institute of Mechanics. Then, we have run our second and third trial which was a huge success.

PROJECT IMPACT

With the implementation of the project, KOC have accepted to give us a bigger contract and include our services in the next coring tender. This has great impact on our company and our partners.

WOULD YOU REAPPLY TO A KFAS PROGRAM?

Yes.

BECAUSE OF THIS PROJECT, ARE YOU LIKELY TO INVEST FURTHER IN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT?

This project has inspired MEOFS and our partners to develop a tool for deeper wells and with H2S requirements. This is a big challenge we are welling to take as we saw the success of our first trail.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND KFAS PROGRAMS TO OTHER COMPANIES?

We would highly recommend it to other partners. The process in KFAS was a very smooth process with big support from all employees.
